Arepuda Pundi Or Rice Dumplings In Masala

Arepuda pundi  or  rice dumplings in masala

The arepuda pundi is a very popular delicacy from south kanara. Enjoy!

Ingredients for making arepuda pundi  or  rice dumplings in masala:

For the pundi  or  dumplings:

Rice powder of  2 cups
Coconut- 1/2 scraped
Water of 4 cups
Salt to taste




For the seasoning of the pundi or dumplings mix

2 to 3 tea spoons of  oil
Few pieces of red chillies
Mustard seeds

For the arepu/ masala
Coconut- 1 scraped
Red chillies-3 ( roasted)
Onion - 1 chopped into peices
Cumin seeds ( jeera )- 1 tea spoon

For seasoning of arepu or  masala
Oil- 2 tea spoons
Onion- 1 chopped
Mustard seeds- 1 to 2 tea spoons
Curry leaves.


Method for preparing Arepuda Pundi  or  Rice Dumplings in Masala:

Take oil in the kadai , add red chillies and mustard seeds till it splutters.
Add this to the rice powder.
Add the coconut scrapings and salt .
Mix all and then remove the red chillies.
Boil water.
Add the rice mix to the boiling water and mix well stirring continuously .
Cook till the mix is thick enough to be rolled into balls ( around 10 minutes)
Remove from the stove.
Make equal lemon sized balls or smaller sized balls with wet hands.
Steam the rice balls in the idli cooker or steamer for 15 to 20 minutes till done.
Pundi is ready. Can be eaten plain with chutney or curry.
(rice balls can also be prepared by grinding dosa or raw or boiled rice after soaking in water
For a few hours, with coconut, salt and water coarsely .Consistency should be thick . Then the
Paste is cooked on a slow fire till it becomes thick enough to roll into balls. Then the balls
Are steamed. )
Here I made arepuda pundi

For the Arepu
Cut the rice balls into half.
Grind coconut, red chillies and cumin seeds to a fine paste.
Remove and add 1 chopped onion and cook it.
Consistency can be adjusted with water.
When it boils add the the cut rice balls and allow to cook for sometime.
Later add the seasoning of oil, chopped onion, mustard seeds and curry leaves
Arepuda pundi is ready to be served hot or The rice balls can be seasoned as above and eaten as it is or with chutney .
