Go See Zo

Author: Niveditha Subramaniam | 29th Jan, 2010

 The Amazing Miss Shinies
Were going on holiday!
Their Facebook status read, "Away"
(Though they'd just packed their bags.)

When Grandmother rang the bell,
They nearly tore it down
And jumped on Ajmal
(But knowing them, he ducked.)

"We're going to see Zo!"
Said one, landing in a bush.
"A real, live Mizo!"
(Chirped the other, plucking a flower.)

"I am sure Zo will love you,"
Grandmother said, happily.
"Isn't it impossible not to?"
(The Shinies asked, lifting their dark glasses.)

Once they were on the plane,
The Shinies turned to Ajmal,
"Tell us about Zo, again."
(And clearing his throat, he began.)

                                                                                      "She stays awake in bed,

And sleeps in the kitchen.
She always nods her head,
(But you can't tell if she's listening.)

You can't tell if her eyes are closed
Or if they've ever been open
She's too lazy to be outspoken
(So you'll never know, if you're a bore.)

She dyes her hair red and blonde
And is quite a fashion plate
She doesn't care if she's late
(Especially when she misses French exams.)"

                                                                                          The Amazing Miss Shinies
Rocked to and fro with laughter
They already felt like they knew her.
(Why wasn't Aizawl there yet?!)

In the airport, as expected,
There was no sign of Zo.
The Shinies weren't dejected.
(They waited, holding pencil shaving roses.)

They waited and waited and waited
But the Mizo never came.
"Where is she? This is lame!"
(The Shinies began to wail.)

They banged their fists on the ground,
And Grandmother joined them.
Though, this was hardly sound.
(In minutes, they were thrown out.)

And what do you think they saw?
Mizos with cuts-outs of Zo!
Making Ajmal go, "Whoaaaaa!"
(But the Shinies refused to look.)

There was one, where she stood
With her eyes shut, fast asleep;
Another, with her hair in a big red heap
(Under a cloud of bamboo shoots and fish!)

Ajmal laughed till he cried
But the Shinies didn't care!
The real Zo wasn't there.
(But, finally, they sneaked a peek.)

Which was a very good thing
For at the end of the line,
Stood Zo with a peace offering
(Roses made from pencil shavings!)
