One evening, the Shinies saw
Ajmal walking home, whistling
And thought it rather puzzling.
(That he was in tune.)
As if this wasn’t mystery enough
They soon saw his head shake
And his scrawny shoulders quake.
(There was something very wrong.)
They both had to agree
This wasn’t the Ajmal they knew.
Could it be swine fl u?
(Their eyes widened at the thought.)
In a frenzied manner,
He lifted one leg and then another
And kicked the air, without a bother.
(But the Shinies couldn’t watch anymore.)
But Ajmal didn’t notice
How the two nearly tore
Right through their door.
(“Shava, Shava!” he was saying.)
“Shava, Shava?”
The Amazing Miss Shinies echoed.
Their foreheads were furrowed.
(What on earth was that?)
“The Bhangra!” Ajmal hollered.
“I am going for dance classes.”
The Shinies lowered their glasses.
(Before collapsing with laughter.)
But Ajmal simply shrugged.
“You’re just jealous, you see,
that I dance to Daler Mehendi!”
(And he Shava Shava-ed some more.)

The Shinies coughed and said,
“We’re too cool for the mainstream.”
But Ajmal gave them a big beam.
(They didn’t know Daler Mehendi, did they?)
They grudgingly admitted,
After an awkward pause,
That they didn’t know who he was.
(“HA!” said Ajmal. He knew it.)
He circled them dramatically.
“Ahem, so do you two,
Want to learn it, too?”
(The Shinies avoided his eye.)
But Ajmal passionately said,
“Say so if you want to.
This silence will not do!”
(Quite a line, he thought.)
“Y-E-S, We doooooooo!”
They shouted into his ear.
But he pretended he couldn’t hear.
(“What?” he asked, innocently.)
The Amazing Miss Shinies howled.
“What else do you want us to say?”
But today was Ajmal’s day.
(“Shava-Shava, of course,” he said.)
They were secretly thrilled,
But said, “What?! Who? Us?”
And made a big fuss.
(Saying solemnly, “Only if we must.”)
Tonight is Bhangra Night
And they’re going to Ajmal’s place.
They can’t wait to see his face.
(They’ve made him a technicolour turban!)
