Have A Fight

Author: Niveditha Subramaniam | 17th Sep, 2009

The Amazing Miss Shinies
Were never babies?
(They’ve never said gagagoogoo in their lives.)

How did they become Shinies?
Ajmal wanted to know.
Then asked, with eyes aglow,
(“Did you drink a magic potion?”)

Did you drink a magic potion?!?!?!
The Shinies coughed and spluttered,
How dare he entertain the notion?
(They were BORN Shinies.)

BUT WHAT ARE SHINIES MADE OF?
This made them contemplate,
“Stardust, of course,” said one.
“And cherries from cherry buns.”
(The other tapped her invisible foot.)

Then delightedly added,
“Our light heads are indeed,
Designed for speed.”
(And gave herself points for rhyming.)

The fi rst Shiny vigorously agreed.
“Our falling off the roof
Is but ample proof.”
(And the score was even.)

Eyes fl ashing, the second retorted,
“Our pointy teeth are the dreams of a tiger!”
As though there was one inside her.
(She sharpened her claws.)

But her sister was a step ahead.
She growled, showing a menacing jaw,
And pounced on her sister’s head.
(Luckily, Ajmal got out of the way.)

 They bit and they scratched,
They brandished swords and clubs,
They kicked and they slapped,
(They even hurled fireballs.)

They pulled each other’s hair
Punched each other’s nose,
Stepped on each other’s toes,
(And made long lasting monkey faces.)

Ajmal, who had been watching,
Decided to do a background score
On the count of four.
(So he sang at the top of his voice.)

The Amazing Miss Shinies
Had fought for many hours
Taking countless avatars.
(They heard him and smiled approvingly.)

And exchanged a grubby smile
Before they collapsed, panting,
Tongues sticking out a mile,
(And then they cried like babies
because everything hurt!)

They wanted colourful bandaids
So Ajmal ran to the pharmacy
Where there was a ‘buy one, get
hundred free.’
(But it was really the opposite.)

But his feet were quicker than his brain
And before the shopkeeper could catch him,
He ran off with the bandaid train,
(Still singing like mad.)

After sticking a hundred bandaids on themselves,
The Amazing Miss Shinies
Were so pleasantly wounded,
(They generously donated one to Ajmal.)

Light from plants

At night, the surface of the Indian Ocean sparkles with light. The light is made by tiny sea plants called dinoflagellates. Large numbers of the plants give off enough light for you to be able to read. The lights sometimes form the shape of a wheel, which may be up to 1.5 km (1 mile) wide.
