Thinking Hat

Author: Arthi Anand | 6th Feb, 2012

Among the subjects in school, Muthu loved English. So much so that he usually completed reading his English text book in the vacation itself. When he had just begun writing in his first standard, he would write letters to imaginary friends; he would write notes to God and would keep making cards often. Some of it had even been lovingly preserved by his sister.

This year they had a new English teacher at school. Her name was Mrs.. Breganza.

“Strange name," said Jones."Exotic," exclaimed Muthu.

She spoke with an 'accent that sounded like the news readers on television. Muthu felt that this is what is termed as the Queen's English.

Mrs. Breganza even held herself and walked about like a queen. Stately and slow. She was old, maybe as old as his grandma who was sixty, thought Muthu. That gave her even more authority. She was rather strict and not very generous with praise. The best compliment she had given was"Not bad!"

While some of his classmates led by Jones were wary of her, Muthu was completely attentive in her class.

As part of improving their English, they were assigned a topic every weekend. On Monday, each of them was asked to submit a write – up on the subject. Mrs. Breganza felt that essay writing improved one's knowledge and creativity and of course, one's language skills. Muthu could not
agree more. He so wanted to impress Mrs. Breganza and get a positive remark - ‘Very Good‘ - on at least one of his worksheets.

They had began with easy topics like their favourite personality and then their favourite movie. In the previous week they had written about the World Cup series. This week they had to write an autobiography.
