Neural Implants

What if you could implant a device inside your brain that can program the brain? Sounds like science fiction? Not really. Tools such as the iPlant are in existence but are used only in specific cases. But the future is increasingly pointing in this direction where neural implants that can think independently of the person and can improve the efficiency of the human brain and also assist in learning new skills.

Until recently, computers were merely following the commands given by the human brain. The new breed of computers is going a step forward. Instead of merely following orders, they perform a more interactive function, by having the capacity to adapt and solve problems in an interactive manner.

The new fangled idea of creating ‘intelligent’ computers such as the one mentioned above has taken shape in the labs of Sanchez and his colleagues at University of Florida. This group of researchers has developed a system that includes goal setting and rewards. They conducted an experiment where rats were taught to move a robotic arm towards a specified target with just the use of their thoughts. The computer had to decipher the signals received from the tiny electrodes that were implanted in the rats’ brains. The computer also got higher points if the rats came closer to the target. The rats on the other hand were rewarded with a drop of water for getting closer to their target. The system of rewards acted as a motivator for the rats to succeed despite the targets getting further away.

Enough said about lab rats. How do you think this will be useful for humans? This technology will be a boon for paraplegic individuals who can use their thoughts to control their limbs. Or for controlling robots that have to function in dangerous terrain? Simply using your thought can accomplish so many moves.

On a lighter note, think of all the fun applications. How about storing all those phone numbers, photographs that you see everyday? It will be a cinch to just use your thoughts to do whatever you want to accomplish. Maybe you even don’t need to memorize all those Math and Science equations before an exam! Neural implants may become as common place as glasses or contact lenses in the future and its applications will bring hope to many.
