Planetary Wind Chimes

Author: Chandamama.com | 28th Aug, 2009

Make a model of the solar system that you can hang in your room. Will you omit Pluto or have it in your wind chime? It’s for your to decide.

You'll Need:

A circular piece of
Cardboard, 1 ft in diameter
Paper in various colors
Scissors
Tape
String
Crayons
A compass for
drawing circles

Method

1. Find the centre of the large cardboard circle by
drawing a line from top to bottom and another from
right to left. This is the position where the Sun will be.

2. Using a compass, draw the orbits of the 9 planets
around the centre of the piece of
cardboard.

3. Using the sharp point of the scissors punch a series of
holes in the cardboard. First punch a hole in the
centre (this is where the Sun will hang). Then punch
one hole somewhere on each circle (orbit); a planet
will hang from each hole.

4. Cut circles from the colored papers to represent the
Sun and each of the planets. Make the Sun the
biggest. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune
are a bit smaller. Make the remaining planets still smaller. Saturn
will have beautiful rings. Write the names of each planet on the back.

 6. Tape a length of string to each planet and the Sun. Lace the other end of each string

through the correct hole in the large
cardboard circle. Mercury goes in the inner orbit, Venus goes in the
second orbit, Earth goes in the third, etc. Tape the end of the string to
upper side of the cardboard.

8. Adjust the length of the strings so
that the planets and Sun all lie in
a plane.

9. To hang your model,
tie three pieces of
strings to the top of
the cardboard -
then tie these three
together. Tie them to a
longer string from which
you'll hang your model).

You now have a windchime of our solar system.
